What is hosting and care?
Hosting is the server the site runs on and the certificate that makes it https; care is everything that keeps it working for a year: security updates, daily backups, monitoring, bug fixes, and the small changes to text and photographs, in both languages on a bilingual site. It is bought a year at a time, and the test of a real care plan is that you can name the last three things it did.

Hosting, in one paragraph
A website is files on a computer that is switched on all the time and reachable from the internet. Hosting is renting space on that computer, the SSL certificate that makes the address https and stops browsers warning visitors off, and the settings that make the site fast from Wales rather than from a data centre on another continent. A static site of the kind we build needs very little of it, which is why hosting is cheap and why it is bundled with the care rather than sold alone.
Care, in the order it earns its money
Monitoring: every site is checked from outside every few minutes, and the form is sent a test message every week, because a form that stops working tells nobody. Backups: a copy every day, kept so that a mistake on Tuesday can be undone on Wednesday. Security: the software the site depends on is updated as patches arrive, which on a static site is rare and quick, and on a plugin-based site is the whole job. Fixes: a broken link, a photo that stopped loading, a form field that a phone update changed. And the changes: text, a photograph, a price, a new opening time, and the Welsh version of each, done the same day you send them.
What care does not include
New pages and new sections, which are design work and are done as a job or as part of the monthly SEO. Translation of long new text, which goes to the translator by the word. A redesign. Photography. And the platform fees of anything rented, a booking engine or a shop subscription, which are paid to the platform.
How to tell a real plan from a monthly fee
Ask what it did last month. A real care plan has a log: the backup ran, the form test passed, two changes were made on the 14th, a certificate was renewed. A fee for hosting only, dressed as care, has nothing to show. Ask too what happens when it ends: the site should move to any host with its files, and the answer should be given in writing. Ours is a year at a time, included for the first year with the larger packages, renewed at the same price, and the site leaves with you if you go.
